The flood from Pakistan - the counterfeit cash

Pakistan has been accused of economic sabotage after a surge in the amount of counterfeit currency being discovered in the vaults of India’s central bank.

The Reserve Bank of India discovered 400,000 counterfeit notes in its coffers in the year to March 2009 — twice the number found a year before and up fourfold on the year before that. “Behind this racket is an organised effort in Pakistan,” P. Chidamabaram, the Home Minister, said. “It’s not a cottage industry.”

Shopkeepers across India have taken to checking notes assiduously, anxious to weed out a growing number of sham 500 rupee (£6.40p) and 1,000 rupee bills. Many customers have taken to carrying laser torches to identify sophisticated counterfeit currency.

The President of the Maldives, the Indian Ocean islands threatened with extinction by rising sea levels, told the United Nations climate-change summit yesterday that the country’s appeals for help had fallen on deaf ears for 20 years.

“Once or twice a year we are invited to attend an important climate change event such as this one — often as a keynote speaker,” Mohammed Nasheed told world leaders at the UN headquarters in New York.

“On cue, we stand here and tell you just how bad things are. We warn you that unless you act quickly and decisively, our homeland and others like it will disappear before the rising sea, before the end of this century.

India's nuclear test possibility worries Pakistan

Pakistan on Thursday said it was “disturbed” by reports that India could be preparing for additional nuclear tests and hoped a unilateral moratorium on testing would remain in place in the region.

“We are disturbed by media reports that India might be considering to conduct additional (nuclear) tests,” Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit told a weekly news briefing.

Basit was responding to a question on concerns expressed by Indian Army chief General Deepak Kapoor about a reported increase in Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal.

Moment Indian police 'executed' captured suspect in cold blood

A probe has been launched into the death of an Indian man after photographs were published appearing to show that he had been executed by police.

Police claimed they shot hospital attendant Chongkham Sanjit, 27, after he fired on them during a chase through a market in the northeastern state of Manipur, on the border with Burma, on July 23.

Authorities believe Sanjit was a member of a banned separatist group.

I think India’s status as a democracy - irrespective of size - is firstly undermined by a political class that thinks it is above the law, by an administrative machinery that thinks it is above the law, and - going by how upset they are at being asked to divulge their financial assets - a judiciary that thinks it is above the law, too. The cops are way, way down the line. And, oh, incidentally, along the way, they get shot, too. None of the others run that risk.

India's Indigenous Genius: Jugaad

Etymology aside, I have always been convinced that the word indigenous arose from India. To make something out of limited resources is India’s genius and, therefore, indigenous. After centuries of foreign attacks, changing cultures and ever-evolving political stands, India has somehow managed to create an insular economy where we create what we need from what we have. In India, we call this jugaad and you can see a jugaad car on the highways of North India made from spare parts.

Sri Lanka enforces tax on aid workers

The Sri Lankan Government is trying to siphon off millions of pounds of humanitarian aid by imposing a 0.9 per cent tax on all funding for aid groups, including the British charities Oxfam and Save the Children Fund, The Times has learnt.

Aid workers said that Burma was the only other country that they could remember imposing such a tax — one of several new measures hampering their efforts to help victims of Sri Lanka’s recent civil war.

The new tax regime was unveiled in 2006 but not enforced immediately. Most agencies did not comply, as they hoped to persuade the Government to change it, according to aid workers. In the past year, however, the Government has grown increasingly hostile towards foreign aid groups and Western donors, accusing many of sympathising with the Tamil Tiger rebels, who were defeated in May.
